DESIS BH is a local manifestation of Network Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability (DESIS) which began in Milan, Italy. Local manifestations of the DESIS Network occur in universities or in university labs as well as in courses such as design, engineering and architecture. The local manifestation of DESIS Belo Horizonte takes place within the State University of Minas Gerais (public university) in the design course and is held in the Center for Design and Technology (CedTec). The goal of DESIS BH, just as other local initiatives of DESIS, is to use design as a tool to provide services for society, governments or companies, which demonstrate characteristics for a sustainable future As a university laboratory, its team consists of teachers, undergraduates and graduate students.
This initiative demonstrates the concern for sustainability and transparency of the leadership of the State University of Minas Gerais, which is the first public institution of higher education in Brazil to produce a Sustainability Report thanks to the DESIS lab.
Before 2012, the DESIS lab (CedTEc) occupied a very small room within another laboratory. Space is a rarity in public universities. This change has improved the team's work in several ways.
The Recognition award brought different partnerships and helped in developing projects. The project that awarded the prize to the group was based on a relationship between the coordinator of the group and a blind student. The award gave recognition to the group.
BH DESIS Lab created a proposal that seeks solutions in Food Design, which makes native foods more attractive, optimizing local resources, creating easily executed revenues and contributing to local tourism.
This CTP refers to a specific member of the team, their departure and the laboratory`s organizational climate before and after this episode. The CTP was justified by the importance of learning what the output of this member has brought to the team as a whole.
This CTP happens almost every year, at the end of the academic periods. Each year, a significant number of students complete their degrees, masters and doctorates and leave the university environment. For the interviewee it is necessary to reorient the work, to learn new ways of accomplishing it, from the skills of the new students. It is a constant adaptation.
