The Shareable local manifestation of Athens consists of a network of initiatives within the wider scope of sharing economy, such as co-working spaces, time-bank, etc. The groups also participate in other international networks, either thematically specialized (e.g. Hackerspace Athens is a member of Hackerspaces) or more general (e.g. Time Exchange Athens is participating in the Ripess Europe Network). Although the groups mentioned on the entry of Athens on the website of Shareable are aware of and collaborate with each other, their collaboration is not structured under the umbrella of Shareable per se. In most cases, the groups have been mapped and added to the platform during a Mapjam (an event during which participants map grassroots sharing projects, cooperatives, community resources, and the commons), without being aware of it. As a result, Shareable Athens is a rather loose network of initiatives that are connected, but in their own terms. However, the networking and collaboration of the initiatives is achieved on a self-organized and often demand-oriented basis (e.g., service exchange between groups, organization of events for sharing economy in Athens). This CTP is about the creation of the time bank network “Time Exchange Athens - Sintagma Square” during the social movement of daily peaceful demonstrations on public spaces that was occurring in Greece throughout the summer 2011.
A core member of Ouishare international network (also writer at Shareable) decided to move to Athens from London. There he discovered an ecosystem of sharing and solidarity initiatives, functioning under its own rules, in the context of the Greek economic crisis.
The organization of a solidarity, sharing and collaborative economy festival in Athens was the start of many collaborations and sharing/solidarity economy projects. It was organized by Time Exchange Athens and other initiatives from all over Greece.
This Critical Turning Point consists of the first of a series of events that were organised in Athens aiming to present the Ouishare international network and attempt to initiate a local manifestation of Ouishare in Athens (Ouishare Greece).
Series of Ouishare meetings in order to organise and structure the Ouishare Greece network. At the third and last meeting not many people show up and the initiators decide to quit the initiative.
The Time Exchange Athens changes its communication strategy and opens up to all media including “mainstream” channels during the period around the Greek referendum and financial “capital controls” .
